Great General History Book

July 1st, 2007

Ok I’ve been in a non-fiction kick for awhile now and the latest book was fantastic. Nathaniel’s Nutmeg by Giles Milton (HD9311.N883155) is a riveting history of the spice wars between England and Holland (Spain and Portugal too). The focus of the story is Nathaniel Courthope and his brave defense of the island of Run. This is set however in the larger context of the spice wars. It wont’ spoil it to say that the narative puts in context the Dutch trade of the island of Manhattan for the island of Run. Another worthwhile addition made from Raven Books in Harvard Square. A great read.

Kathleen and I went out to see my cousin Lauren marry that nice Andy fella. We had a great time at the Wedding and in LA in general and then headed down to San Diego to see Kathleen’s brother Anthony. Good times were had by all.

Reposting some shots

August 20th, 2006

These are shots from a trip I took to Cambodia in 2002. I was very lucky to get assigned to a conference in Singapore. I figured that you don’t make it to Asia everyday so I booked an open jaw ticket into Singapor and out of Bangkok. These photos are of the temples in and around the Angkor Wat complex in Siem Reap.
